Himfr.com Reports Chinese Knot Button Exhibition

The knot button is a distinctive characteristic of traditional Chinese apparel. Even today, it is still highly visible on garments like Qipao, or cheongsam. During the upcoming World Expo in Shanghai, an exhibition will be dedicated to this piece of intangible heritage. Now let’s take a look at an ongoing display of knot buttons.
Part of China’s apparel tradition, the knot buttons are enjoying renewed popularity. Recently, an exhibition dedicated to knot buttons was held in Beijing, which displayed over a hundred and fifty varieties. The show is scheduled for a world tour.
The history of knot buttons goes back to the prehistoric era when ropes were first used as a primitive form of belts. The earliest written records come from the Zhou Dynasty nearly three thousand years ago. In the 4th century BC, the knot button took its present form and remained largely unchanged until the Qing Dynasty.
The knot button is widely used in the traditional garments of China. They are usually made of cords woven from cotton. Certain intricate patterns and designs would require the use of metal wires. A change of style in the early Qing Dynasty in the second half of 17th century is considered a watershed in the use of knot buttons. Back then, jackets and cheongsam of the Manchurian ruling class began to entail wider use of knot buttons.
Knot buttons comes in a dazzling array of varieties, ranging from plain and simple straight knots to elaborate flowery knots. However, generally speaking, two major groups are distinguished on the basis of utility and ornament.
Recent years have seen a flourishing of knot buttons in contemporary clothing. Knot buttons of various shapes and sizes are being used on different types of garments.
Among the most popular designs are butterflies, rosebuds, and bias relief weaving. Used on different garments, knot buttons would convey the spirit and temperament of different eras.
Of all knot buttons, the tried and true handmade ones are best liked and admired. They represent the creativity and inspiration of their makers and are appreciated for their distinctive aesthetics. And the making of knot buttons has become a hobby for more and more urban dwellers in China, while modern elements are being fused into the ancient art.
The current exhibition in Beijing displays such innovative designs as the Great Wall, Shanghai Archways, as well as patterns like pandas, teapots and chairs.

A high-throughput, low-power asynchronous Mesh-of-Trees interconnection network for the eXplicit Multi-Threading (XMT) parallel architecture.

$49.99

As the number of processing cores per chip continues to grow, the on-chip network connecting processors to memory becomes increasingly crucial for performance. Future architectures will face scalability concerns as networks will require more die area and consume more power. The Mesh-of-Trees interconnection network is a high-throughput, low-latency network that uses pipelined routing decisions to achieve high performance for single-chip parallel processors that require high band-width to on-chip memory resources. The network has similar area requirements to other existing networks, but can utilize more bandwidth due to its unique topology.;Current single-chip parallel processors are developed as synchronous (clocked) circuits. A recent trend has emerged towards implementing GALS (globally asynchronous, locally synchronous) architectures, which do not require a clock tree spanning the entire chip, thus avoiding the considerable challenges of design and managing power consumption.;This thesis presents an asynchronous (clockless) implementation of the Mesh-of-Trees network that features lower power and area demands, while maintaining the high throughput and low latency properties of the synchronous network. Two new asynchronous designs are proposed for the fundamental pipelined components of the Mesh-of-Trees network (routing and arbitration), which are optimized for power, area, latency and throughput. Performance and power consumption are evaluated for asynchronous components in isolation, as well as a projected full network layout.;Two issues top the agenda of CPU design in the emerging many-core era: programmers’ productivity and power consumption. Through its reliance on the richest available theory of parallel algorithms, the eXplicit Multi-Threading (XMT) parallel architecture addresses programmers’ productivity. The motivation for this work is to provide an effective interconnection network for the XMT architecture in terms of both performance and power

John Quincy Adams (American Presidents Series)

John Quincy Adams (American Presidents Series)

A vivid portrait of a man whose pre- and post-presidential careers overshadowed his presidency.Chosen by the House of Representatives after an inconclusive election against Andrew Jackson, John Quincy Adams often failed to mesh with the ethos of his era, pushing unsuccessfully for a strong, consolidated national government. Historian Robert V. Remini recounts how in the years before his presidency Adams was a shrewd, influential diplomat, and later, as a dynamic secretary of state under President James Monroe, he solidified many basic aspects of American foreign policy, including the Monroe Doctrine. Undoubtedly his greatest triumph was the negotiation of the Transcontinental Treaty, through which Spain acknowledged Florida to be part of the United States. After his term in office, he earned the nickname “Old Man Eloquent” for his passionate antislavery speeches.

The meshes are of course larger than those of a herring net, there being usually twenty-two or twenty-three meshes to the yard. Pilchard drift-nets, principally used on the coast of Cornwall—for the pilchard is essentially a Cornish fish in this coun-try—are about the size of those used for herrings, but with a slightly smaller mesh ; in fact, shrunk herring nets are frequently used in the pilchard fishery when the meshes have become too small for their original purpose. Drift-nets are occasionally used in deep water estuaries for the purpose of catching salmon, but practically they are employed only in the open sea ; and a very large proportion of the enormous numbers of herrings, mackerel, and pilchards, which are annually caught around our coasts, are taken by means of these nets. The Seine Or Sean. The sweep-net, commonly known in this country as the seine or scan, is one of the oldest implements of fishing of which we have any record, for there is evidence of the seine or draw-net having been in use by some nations long before the Christian era ; and in the New Testament we read of fishing having been carried on by some of the men who afterwards became Apostles, in a manner which agrees entirely with our present mode of working the seine. It was well known to the Greeks and Romans, and in this country its history in Cornwall dates back so far that it is believed to have been introduced by the Phoenicians, who were accustomed to use this net, and who at a very remote period traded for tin and other things to that part of our country which is now known as Cornwall. Seines are worked on various parts of our coasts, and in rivers and other inland waters ; in fact, they may be used almost everywhere if there
