Sweeney Todd in Concert

Sweeney Todd in Concert

$9.78

The San Francisco Symphony Orchestra’s 2001 concert production of Stephen Sondheim’s witty shocker is musically superb and (even without scenery) theatrically effective. The performers are in costume and use a few essential props such as Todd’s razor, but more than these details the quality of their singing and acting makes this production stand out. It looks like a final seal of approval at the e…

The Go-Go’s – Live in Central Park

$1.45

More than another cozy, rock & roll evening under the Manhattan firmament, this breathless concert performance by the come-and-go Go-Go’s is long-awaited evidence of an essential band’s reawakened brilliance. Considering that in 2001 the Go-Go’s hadn’t released a new studio album for 17 years (a dry spell ending with God Bless the Go-Go’s, followed by a lengthy tour) or played together very m…

Kiss Me Kate (Broadway Revival – PBS Great Performances) [VHS]

$19.98

Cole Porter’s masterwork Kiss Me, Kate was revived in a splashy production that played on Broadway in 1999 then in London, where this version was filmed in front of a live audience in 2002. Broadway veterans Brent Barrett and Rachel York play pompous Fred Graham and feisty Lilli Vanessi, respectively, the couple whose roles in Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew mirror their offstage feud. The …

Victor/Victoria (1995 Broadway Production) [VHS]

$4.00

Fans of Julie Andrews will delight in this 1995 videotaping of the stage musical Victor/Victoria, based on the 1982 movie of the same name. The plot has been kept intact: an out-of-work British soprano (Julie Andrews) in Paris falls in with a down-on-his-luck gay man (Tony Roberts), who gets the idea to present Victoria as the world’s greatest female impersonator, Victor. The plan is a phenomenal …

Tony Bennett's New York [VHS]

Tony Bennett’s New York [VHS]

$19.98

His heart may be in San Francisco and his act in Atlantic City (at least for the purposes of this program), but singer Tony Bennett, the son of an Italian immigrant grocer born in Astoria, Queens, is a New Yorker through and through, a point this documentary-cum-performance DVD makes abundantly clear. With writer-coproducer Reggie Nadelson providing narration (she’s not exactly James Earl Jones, t…

She Sang Like an Angel and Other Contemporary Poems:A Tribute To My African American Friends

She Sang Like an Angel and Other Contemporary Poems:A Tribute To My African American Friends

$17.91

A tribute to my African American friends. This volume of poetry has been in the planning stage since March of 2000. In this collection of contemporary and abstract poetry, Michael A. J. Sardo paints word pictures, forms and images about the lives of Black African American friends. He touches on their lives and activities as he sees them, not just through physical eyes but also through spiritual eyes. The African Americans Sardo writes about in many of his poems have played an important role, from time to time, in assisting him and his wife at the Jefferson County Rescue Mission where they both work, assisting homeless and poor people of Jefferson County, Missouri. In writing this tribute, Michael A. J. Sardo has tried to capture moods and images of African Americans he has known in Missouri but he also goes back to his early childhood in East New York, Brooklyn, Manhattan and the Bronx. This small book makes no attempt to be an erudite poetic work on African Americans. Rather, A Tribute to My African American Friends is strictly a collection of contemporary and abstract poetry about the lives and activities of Black people who have made lasting impressions on Michael A. J. Sardo.

''And fair fables fall'': De-symbolized lyrical cityscapes of Jean Toomer, Hart Crane, William Carlos Williams, and Gwendolyn Brooks.

”And fair fables fall”: De-symbolized lyrical cityscapes of Jean Toomer, Hart Crane, William Carlos Williams, and Gwendolyn Brooks.

$49.99

The dissertation stages a fundamental historical and literary revision of the modern city as a negative concept by assessing and explaining the particular formal and thematic processes of ‘de-Symbolization’ of four different modern American cities, Washington, D.C., New York City, Paterson, NJ, and Chicago in the works of four American urban poets Jean Toomer, Hart Crane, William Carlos Williams, and Gwendolyn Brooks. De-symbolization, the rejection of the negative symbolic matrix modernist poets usually employ in representing urban spaces, effects a radical rejection of the modernists’ abstract approach to urban modernity as a kind of featureless and deindividuated hell; it also radically rejects a parallel negative idealism common in the discourse of urban planning. Famous architects and planners used versions of such conceptual negative idealism and relied on dystopian images of existing cities to articulate their utopian visions of a better urban society. My analysis of these poets’ understanding of urban problems shows that they believe utopianism occludes real problems of cities, such as uneven distribution of resources and the division of city spaces along racial and social lines, and fails to capture the specific lived experiences of the citizens of actual particular cities. Strongly opposing the tradition of representing cities through negative urban Symbolism, these poets interject a forceful new way of articulating local or provisional claims about urban identity. Their de-symbolizing formal strategies involve concrete diction, which is historically rooted in a particular city, and polyvocality that elevates characters and suppresses the authorial voice. By using these de-symbolizing devices the poets I study point out the shortcomings in both modernist symbolic representations and utopian urban design, which, by relying on idealized plans, tend to ignore the real history of social divisions that organize urban space.
