Chapters: Accidental Human Deaths in Venezuela, Deaths by Firearm in Venezuela, Massacres in Venezuela, People Executed by Venezuela, Bo Díaz, Los Maniceros Massacre, Lope de Aguirre, Caracazo, Manuel Piar, Massacre of El Amparo, Yumare Massacre. Excerpt: Baudilio José Díaz Seijas (March 23, 1953 November 23, 1990) was a Major League Baseball catcher born in Cúa, Miranda, Venezuela, and is widely considered the finest catcher born in Venezuela. At fourteen, Diaz played on a national champion Little League team that missed a trip to the 1967 Little League World Series when an earthquake devastated Caracas. Three years later, he was signed by Boston Red Sox as an amateur free agent. Diaz spent seven seasons in Boston’s farm system before receiving a September call-up to the Red Sox in 1977. He appeared in two games, and struck out to Dennis Martinez in his only at-bat. During Spring training, 1978, he was traded to the Cleveland Indians along with Ted Cox, Mike Paxton and Rick Wise for Dennis Eckersley and Fred Kendall. Díaz backed up Gary Alexander behind the plate in 1978, however, lost the backup catcher job to Ron Hassey the following season, and spend most of 1979 in triple A. Following Alexander’s trade to the Pittsburgh Pirates, and an injury to Hassey, Diaz emerged as the Indians’ starting catcher early in 1981. He batted .356 with four home runs and 25 runs batted in in the first half of the strike shortened season, and received an All-Star nod when the season resumed on August 9. Díaz was traded in November 1981 to the Philadelphia Phillies, where he set career highs in batting average (.288), home runs (18) and RBIs (85). His defense was crucial to pitcher Steve Carlton, who won his fourth Cy Young Award that season. In 1983, the |

Miami Orioles Players $8.87 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Not illustrated. Excerpt: José Dennis Martínez Ortiz (born May 14, 1955 in Granada, Nicaragua), better known as Dennis Martínez, was the first Nicaraguan baseball player to play in Major League Baseball. During his career, he was known by the nickname El Presidente (The President). A right-handed starting pitcher, Martínez played for the Baltimore Orioles (1976-1986), Montreal Expos (1986-1993), Cleveland Indians (1994-1996), Seattle Mariners (1997) and Atlanta Braves (1998). In his 23-year career, Martínez had a 245-193 won-loss record with 2149 strikeouts, a 3.70 ERA, 30 shutouts, 122 complete games, four saves, and 3999 2/3 innings pitched in 692 games played (562 as starter). He is one of the top Latin American pitchers of all-time. On July 28, 1991, he became the first Latin American born pitcher to throw a perfect game, the 13th in major league history, pitching for the Montreal Expos against the Los Angeles Dodgers. On September 28, 1993, Martinez won his 100th game for the Expos, becoming one of nine major league pitchers ever with at least 100 wins in both the American and National leagues. Others to do that are Jim Bunning, Ferguson Jenkins, Al Orth, Gaylord Perry, Kevin Brown, Randy Johnson, Nolan Ryan and Cy Young. On September 28, 1995, Martínez was the last man to pitch to the late Hall of Famer Kirby Puckett in a regular-season game. A wild pitch by Martínez broke Puckett’s jaw; the following spring during Grapefruit League spring training, Puckett developed glaucoma in his right eye and never played again. It was determined by team doctors that his broken jaw had no impact on his glaucoma. In fact, the pitch hit the left side of Puckett’s face while the glaucoma was in Puckett’s right eye.
