Puccini – La Bohème / Severini, Pavarotti, Freni, San Francisco Opera [VHS] $9.00 In 1989 when this production was taped, Luciano Pavarotti and Mirella Freni had already enjoyed long, distinguished careers. In other words, they were considerably older than La Bohème’s romantic young couple, Mimi and Rodolfo. If you find this consideration important, it might be wise to skip this Bohème and invest instead in the bright, youthful, and energetic Sydney Opera production or t… |

Meyerbeer – L’Africaine / Arena, Domingo, Verrett, San Francisco Opera [VHS] $29.95 This is both rare and well-done: a sadly neglected grand opera, as spectacular in its own way as Aida or Turandot, in a production that is not likely to be surpassed in the foreseeable future. Meyerbeer’s L’Africaine is remembered today almost exclusively for a single aria that Enrico Caruso recorded in Italian, “O Paradiso,” sung by Placido Domingo in the original French in this production. … |

The abbey church was created a cathedral in 1966 and is the seat of the Bishop of Saint-Denis, Pascal Michel Ghislain Delannoy. The building is of unique importance historically and architecturally.Founded in the 7th century by Dagobert I on the burial place of Saint Denis , a patron saint of France, the church became a place of pilgrimage and the burial place of the French Kings, nearly every king from the 10th to the 18th centuries being buried there, as well as many from the previous centuries. (It was not used for the coronations of kings, this role being designated to the Cathedral of Reims ; however, queens were commonly crowned there.) “Saint-Denis” soon became the abbey church of a |

1306 Establishments: States and Territories Established in 1306, Aachen, Guozijian, Certosa Di Padula $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Padula Charterhouse , in Italian Certosa di Padula (or Certosa di San Lorenzo di Padula ), is a large and famous Carthusian monastery, or charterhouse, located in the town of Padula , in the Cilento National Park (near Salerno ) in Southern Italy . It is a World Heritage site .The monastery is the second largest charterhouse in Italy after the one in Parma . Its building history covers 450 years, but the principal parts of the buildings are in Baroque style. It is a very large monastery, comprising 51,500 m² (12.7 acres), with 320 rooms and halls.History Padula Charterhouse was founded by Tommaso di San Severino on 27 April 1306 on the site of an earlier monastery. It is dedicated to Saint Lawrence , and its architectural structure supposedly recalls the griddle-iron upon which the saint was burnt alive. The monastery has the biggest cloister in the world, covering 12,000 m² (2.97 acres) and surrounded by 84 columns. A famous spiral staircase of white marble inside an annex leads to the large library.According to the strict Carthusian distinction between contemplation and work, there are two distinct places for these practices: on the one hand the peaceful cloisters, the library with its fine Vietri ceramic tiled floor, the chapels decorated with fine inlaid marble works and the cloister orchards; and on the other hand the large kitchen, the cellars with their enormous wine vats, the laundries, and the huge external yards, where there were people working in the stables, ovens, stores, and at the olive oil mill. The yards were used for productive activities and for trade between the charterhouse and the external world. The monastery also houses the archaeological museum of Western Lucania, which preserves a collection of all the finds unearthed in the excavations at |

1440s Paintings: The Battle of San Romano, Portrait of a Young Girl, Niccoline Chapel, the Triumph of Death, the Baptism of Christ $14.13 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Detail of Niccolò da TolentinoThe Battle of San Romano is a set of three paintings by the Florentine painter Paolo Uccello depicting events that took place at the battle of San Romano in 1432. The paintings are in tempera on wooden panels, each over 3 metres long, and were commissioned sometime around 1356 by Cosimo de’ Medici, to decorate the newly built Medici Palace. They are significant as revealing the development of linear perspective in early Italian Renaissance painting, and are unusual as a major secular commission. The paintings were much admired in the 15th century. They are now divided between three collections, the National Gallery, London, the Galleria degli Uffizi and the Musée du Louvre, Paris. The three paintings (from left to right) are: The Uffizi panel was probably designed to be the central painting of the triptych and is the only one signed by the artist. The sequence most widely agreed among art historians is: London, Uffizi, Louvre, although others have been proposed. They may represent different times of day: dawn (London), mid-day (Paris) and dusk (Uffizi) – the battle lasted eight hours. In the London painting, Niccolò da Tolentino, with his large gold and red patterned hat, is seen leading the Florentine cavalry. In the foreground, broken lances and a dead soldier are carefully aligned, so as to create an impression of perspective. The three paintings were designed to be hung high on three different walls of a room, and the perspective designed with that height in mind, which accounts for many apparent anomalies in the perspective when seen in photos or at normal gallery height. Many areas of the paintings were covered with gold and silver leaf. While the gold leaf, such as that found on the decorations of the |

1540s Paintings $14.13 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Portrait of the Vendramin Family is a painting by the Italian Renaissance master Titian, executed around 1543-1547. It presently hangs in the National Gallery in London. The canvas was commissioned by the noble Vendramin family, and portrays, as dictated by Venetian custom, only male members of the dynasty. It includes the brothers Andrea and Gabriele Vendramin, and Andrea’s seven sons. However Andrea was apparently only three years older than Gabriele, which one would not think from the two figures here. It remains uncertain which brother is which. Andrea may have been painted posthumously following his death in 1547. The sons are Lunardo (the eldest, bearded, who also died in 1547), then standing on the left Luca, Francesco and Bartolo (added later by another artist), and on the right Giovanni, Filippo and Federico. The figures are depicted next to an altar upon which is a reliquary containing a piece of the True Cross brought from the Holy Land. This reliquary still resides in Venice today and was earlier connected with a miracle which took place in the city sometime during the period 1370-82. This was depicted by Vittore Carpaccio, Gentile Bellini and other artists in a series of paintings for the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista. When accidentally dropped into a canal during a congested procession the relic did not sink but hovered over the water, evading others trying to help, until an earlier Andrea Vendramin dived in and retrieved it. This Andrea had been presented with the relic in 1369, in his capacity as head of the confraternity or Scuola of San Giovanni Evangelista. Both the large Bellini painting, The Miracle of the True Cross near San Lorenzo Bridge, of 1496-1500, and the Carpaccio of 1494, are now in the Accadem… More: |

Chapters: Saint-Gobain, Netherlands Marine Corps, College General, Grecian Coffee House, San Ferdinando, Lubomirski’s Rokosz. Excerpt: The College General (Malay : Seminari Tinggi Katolik ) is a Roman Catholic seminary located in Tanjung Bungah , Penang , Malaysia . The college’s foundation can be traced back to the 1665 establishment of the Seminary of Saint Joseph in Ayuthia which was then the capital of Siam (now Thailand).History Ayuthia (1665 – 1765) The Seminary (letter “G”) was located in the western part of Ayutthaya , in the Cochinchinese quarter. The College General traces its history to the establishment of theSeminary of Saint Joseph in Ayuthia , Siam in 1665 by the Vicars Apostolic Bishops Pallu and Lambert de la Motte of the Paris Foreign Missions Society . They officially requested the establishment of the Seminary to the Siamese king Narai on 25 May 1665, who granted them a large spot on the river Menam , and the Cochinchinese quarter named “Banplahet”. King Narai requested that ten Siamese students be incorporated in the Seminary so as to learn European knowledge. Otherwise, the students of the Seminary came from Goa , Macao , Cochinchina and Tonkin . In 1675, Mgr Louis Laneau , who had been nominated Vicar Apostolic of Siam two years before, became Superior of the Seminary. Among the first two priests that graduated was François Pérez (Francis Perez), born of a Manilla father and a Siamese mother, who was later consecrated a bishop and named Vicar Apostolic of Cochin-China in 1691 .In 1680, the Seminary was moved to a larger location in Mahapram, also near Ayutthaya, and was named Seminary of the Holy Angels .The events of the Siamese revolution in 1688 saw the ousting of French forces from Siam, and the imprisonment of Louis Laneau and half of |
